What the job is: Rhodes University is looking for a Senior Finance Administrator to manage short-term risk and investments. This full-time position is based in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, and is part of the Finance Division. The role focuses on handling the university’s financial operations, including insurance, investments, and administrative tasks for the Board of Governors.

What you will do: You will be responsible for managing the university’s bank accounts, ensuring all financial transactions are accurate and any issues are quickly identified and resolved. This includes preparing and submitting VAT returns on time and handling related administrative tasks. You will also provide strong accounting and administrative support to maintain clear communication, accuracy, and high service standards.

Another key part of the job is overseeing the university’s insurance portfolio and investments, ensuring everything runs smoothly. You will work closely with the Board of Governors to support their financial needs and ensure all financial records are well-maintained.

What you need: To apply, you need at least Grade 12, though a National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in accounting would be a big advantage. You should have around six years of experience in a similar role, including experience in accounting administration, bank reconciliations, and working under pressure to meet deadlines.

Strong computer skills, especially with accounting software, are a must. Experience with insurance administration, supervising teams, or using finance systems like SAP or Oracle would be helpful. The ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks at once is also important.

What you will get: This is a permanent position with a starting salary of around R367,497 per year before pension contributions. The total cost to the company is approximately R499,206 per year. While the job is full-time and based on-site in Makhanda, the university may consider a fixed-term contract of at least three years instead of a permanent appointment.
