Rhodes University in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, is looking for two Electrical Artisan Assistants to join their Facilities and Infrastructure team. This is a permanent position, but the university may choose to offer a fixed-term contract of at least three years instead. The role is based on-site at the university campus.

As an Electrical Artisan Assistant, your main job will be to help maintain all the university’s lighting and heating systems. You will assist electricians with tasks such as building and repairing electrical installations, fixing wiring problems, and maintaining electrical equipment and appliances across the campus. This includes working on construction projects, troubleshooting electrical issues, and ensuring everything is safe and functional.

You will need to work at heights, using ladders, scaffolding, or aerial platforms, so being comfortable with heights is important. You may also be asked to drive a light motor vehicle as part of your duties, which requires a valid driver’s license.

To apply, you must have completed an N2 qualification (equivalent to NQF Level 3) and have around three years of experience in electrical work. Your experience should include:
- Fixing and repairing lighting systems
- General electrical repairs, including using tools like multimeters and other electrical testing equipment
- Working safely at heights
- Holding a valid driver’s license for a light motor vehicle

The salary for this Grade 6 position is R212,178 per year before pension contributions, with the total cost to the company being approximately R304,932 per year.
