What the job is

This is a 17-month internship position at BDO South Africa in Johannesburg, Gauteng. The role is for a Financial Services Advisory Intern, where you will work in the Financial Services Advisory team. You will gain experience in financial reporting, technology risk, governance, regulatory compliance, and client consulting in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

What you will do

You will test general information technology controls and application controls. You will analyze information systems data to check if transactions are processed accurately, completely, and on time. You will help identify and assess new technology and financial reporting risks that clients in the Financial Services industry might face. You will provide technical support to auditors using computer-assisted audit techniques. You will assist in preparing reports, presentations, and advisory documents for clients. You will also help with regulatory compliance checks, including reviews of South African financial laws like FAIS, FICA, FSCA, NCA, and POPIA. Additionally, you will contribute to consulting projects, such as risk advisory, business process improvements, and governance reviews. You will support due diligence and data analysis tasks using tools like IDEA and MS Excel. You will research IT risk management, IT governance, and industry best practices, including frameworks like COBIT, ITIL, and ISO 27001-2.

What you need

You must have a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Business Management, Engineering, Accounting, Information Systems, Informatics, Finance, Law, or a related field. A BCom in Accounting, Internal Auditing, or Law (LLB with a commercial focus) is also acceptable. No prior work experience is required, but any vacation work, clerkships, or part-time roles in consulting, audit, legal, financial services, or regulatory fields will be beneficial. You should be proficient in MS Office, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, and have a willingness to learn data analytics tools. Strong skills like professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure are important. You should also be interested in emerging technologies like AI, machine learning, and IoT, and be able to work well in a diverse team.
