What the job is

This is a job for a National Operations Manager at Kontak Recruitment, based in East Rand, Johannesburg. The role involves overseeing a national road freight and distribution operation across multiple branches in South Africa. You will be responsible for leading senior operational managers and ensuring the business runs smoothly and profitably on a national scale.

What you will do

You will manage the daily operations of the national branch network, ensuring all branches meet their targets for freight volumes, productivity, service levels, and costs. You will lead and coach Branch Managers, conduct performance reviews, and implement improvement plans. You will also develop and analyze reports on key performance indicators, service delivery, and operational costs. Additionally, you will oversee freight handling, warehousing, cross-docking, and delivery processes, while ensuring compliance with industry regulations and company standards. You will handle customer complaints, represent the company in senior client meetings, and work closely with HR, Finance, and other departments to drive accountability and high performance across all branches.

What you need

You must have proven senior management experience in the South African road freight industry, specifically in break-bulk and express road-freight distribution. Experience managing multiple branches, large operational teams, and operational KPIs is essential. You should have a strong understanding of national freight distribution, warehousing, and route efficiency, as well as experience in cost control and financial reporting. Knowledge of NBCRFLI requirements and South African road freight compliance is required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are a must, along with proficiency in Excel, data analysis, and transport-management systems. A relevant qualification in Logistics, Supply Chain, Transport, or Business Management is advantageous. A valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel nationally are also required.
