What the job is

This is a Civil Engineer position at SAFAL Group in Uganda. The company is looking for someone to oversee and manage civil and structural construction work for a project. The role is based in Uganda and is a contract position.

What you will do

You will plan, coordinate, and supervise all civil and structural work, including site development, earthworks, equipment foundations, factory buildings, steel structures, roads, drainage, and other infrastructure. You will work with civil consultants, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors, and subcontractors to ensure construction activities are well-planned and executed properly. You will review engineering drawings, technical specifications, and construction methods to make sure they match the approved designs and project requirements. You will monitor daily construction activities, track progress against schedules, and identify any delays or issues that need fixing. You will supervise contractors to ensure their work meets quality, safety, and design standards. You will measure completed work, keep accurate site records, and help review contractor payment claims. You will coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and other teams to ensure all parts of the project fit together correctly. You will conduct regular site inspections to check progress, work quality, and material standards. You will review contractor documents like method statements, inspection plans, and material approvals. You will identify technical problems, construction challenges, and ways to save costs, then work with others to solve them. You will prepare and maintain project documents, including progress reports, inspection reports, and construction drawings. You will ensure the project follows all legal, safety, and regulatory requirements. You will attend project meetings and provide updates on progress, issues, and solutions. You will support the inspection, testing, and handover of civil and structural work, including fixing any remaining defects and completing documentation.

What you need

You must have a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering or a related field. You need at least five years of experience in civil engineering and construction, preferably in industrial facilities, manufacturing plants, or large infrastructure projects. You should have practical knowledge of earthworks, reinforced concrete, equipment foundations, steel structures, road construction, and drainage systems. You must be able to read and understand engineering drawings, technical specifications, and construction documents. You need a good understanding of construction methods, quality control, and safety requirements. Experience supervising contractors, monitoring progress, and verifying payments is required. You should know how to plan projects, create schedules, and track costs. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and project scheduling software is needed. Strong communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills are essential, as well as the ability to work in a team and manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and standards.
