This is a contract position for a Senior Data Engineer at iqbusiness, based in Cape Town, Western Cape. The role is part of the Global Business Services team and involves working with an international partner from the Welgemoed office. The position is hybrid, requiring three days on-site and two days working from home over a 12-month contract.

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and cloud-based data platforms. Your work will focus on creating and managing Snowflake environments, ensuring data is reliable, well-structured, and accessible for analytics and data science teams. You will use tools like dbt to transform, automate, and govern data while following best practices for modularity, testing, and documentation.

You will develop continuous data ingestion pipelines using Snowpipe, Streams, and Tasks, as well as implement AI-driven pipelines to process and structure unstructured data. Responsibilities include optimizing Snowflake performance and costs, ensuring data quality and reliability, and collaborating with analytics, product, and data science teams to deliver high-quality datasets. Additionally, you will automate workflows using Git-driven processes and maintain clear documentation for the team.

To qualify for this role, you need a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field. At least five years of experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar data-focused role is required. Strong hands-on experience with Snowflake architecture, design, and administration is mandatory, along with expertise in dbt for data transformation.

You should have experience designing multi-tenant or multi-schema data warehouse architectures in Snowflake, proficiency in SQL and Python, and experience building ingestion pipelines that leverage AI or machine learning. Familiarity with cloud environments like Azure, AWS, or GCP, version control (Git), and CI/CD workflows is also essential. A solid understanding of data modeling (Kimball/Dimensional) and strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are key.

This is a 12-month contract role with a focus on delivering modern data solutions in a hybrid work environment. The role is directly billable and falls below R1.2 million annually.
