What the job is

This is a Paralegal position at SECTION27, a human rights organization based in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. The role involves providing legal support and advice to the public, working closely with attorneys, and managing legal enquiries. The job is a 2-year contract with some remote work allowed.

What you will do

You will be the first point of contact for people seeking legal advice, handling enquiries by phone, email, or in person. You will record client details and case information, take statements, and consult with attorneys to provide sound legal advice. You will also manage referrals, maintain an up-to-date database of stakeholders, and prepare detailed reports. Additional tasks include conducting legal research, assisting with ad hoc legal tasks, and collaborating with partner organizations.

What you need

You need a Diploma in Paralegal Studies or an LLB degree, along with at least 1-2 years of relevant experience. Strong administrative, research, and writing skills are required. You must be fluent in English, and proficiency in an indigenous South African language is a plus. Other requirements include the ability to work under pressure, good communication skills, and the willingness to travel occasionally. Knowledge of human rights and public interest law is advantageous.
