What the job is
This is a full-time position for a Biodiversity Officer (Production) with the Border Management Authority, based in Ramatlabama, North West. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with biodiversity laws, particularly related to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) regulations at Ports of Entry.

What you will do
You will inspect shipments related to CITES and verify permits and supporting documents to ensure they meet legal requirements. You will check pre-booked CITES shipments and their permits, approve compliant permits to release shipments, and verify TOPS permits when needed. You will identify and report any non-compliant shipments, permits, or suspected biodiversity offenses, and refer them for further action. You will also support joint compliance operations with law enforcement, respond to inquiries about permits and compliance, and maintain accurate records of inspections and reports. Additionally, you will follow approved procedures for biodiversity compliance and enforcement.

What you need
You must have a Grade 12 certificate and an undergraduate degree (NQF Level 6) in Biological Sciences, Botany, Zoology, Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, or a related field. At least three years of experience in biodiversity management, environmental compliance, or a related area is required. Experience with CITES or TOPS permit administration, compliance inspections, and environmental legislation is preferred. You must be flexible with working hours, including overtime, weekends, and public holidays, and may need to travel to different Ports of Entry. Knowledge of relevant laws, such as the Border Management Authority Act and the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, is essential.
