Acing Your Technical Interview: A Practical Checklist
The technical interview is the stage where preparation matters most and nerves can undo months of good work. Here's a grounded, practical approach to the 48 hours before and the interview itself.
48 hours before
Review the job description one more time. Note the specific technologies and domains they mentioned. Your prep should be weighted towards those, not general computer science theory.
Do two or three warm-up problems out loud. Not to learn new material — to get your voice and reasoning into gear. Thinking silently and talking through your thought process use different mental muscles.
Prepare two or three stories. Most technical interviews include system design or behavioural elements. Have specific, results-focused examples ready: one about a technical decision you made under constraint, one about a debugging challenge, one about collaborating with a non-technical stakeholder.
During the interview
Clarify before you code. Ask about input ranges, edge cases, and whether optimising for time or space. This is not stalling — it demonstrates engineering discipline. Interviewers rate candidates who ask clarifying questions more highly than those who dive in and write incorrect code quickly.
Talk through your reasoning, not just your code. Interviewers need to see how you think. A brute-force solution explained clearly is often valued more than a clever solution produced in silence.
When you're stuck, say so — and use it. "I'm not sure of the optimal approach here, but let me think about it from first principles…" is a completely acceptable thing to say and gives you a moment to reset. Staying silent while panicking is far worse.
After the coding section
You'll almost always have time for questions. Ask about the technical stack decisions behind a specific product feature, or how the engineering team approaches incident response. Specific, curious questions signal genuine interest and technical engagement.
