Job Description


The successful candidate will manage the Operational Tax, Income Tax and VAT aspects of the Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Eswatini (BLNE) subsidiaries and South Africa and ensure 100% compliance with Revenue Authorities.

They will report directly to the Finance Manager and will be part of a structured Finance team.

We’re a fully in-office team. This role is based at our Support Centre in Kuils River, Cape Town.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Income Tax Management 

  • Tax Accounting (quarterly and at year end)
  • Raise any data errors and assist in correcting errors
  • Compile tax calculations for reporting purposes
  • Compile deferred tax calculations for reporting purposes
  • Prepare tax journals
  • Arrange provisional tax payments (BLNE+Z)
  • Review provisional tax payments prepared by the Project Accountant – Tax
  • Calculate income tax for return purposes
  • Prepare and submit income tax returns (BLNE+Z)
  • Arrange income tax payments (BLNE+Z)
  • Review income tax returns prepared by Project Accountant-Tax
  • Prepare annual calculations
  • Arrange invoicing and payments between Companies
  • Calculate withholding tax payments
  • Review work done by Project Accountant-Tax 

Indirect Tax Management

  • Obtain data for VAT calculations and assess reasonability
  • Raise any data errors and assist in correcting errors
  • Implement controls and reasonability tests
  • Review the monthly VAT returns for reasonability and accuracy and highlight any discrepancies
  • Advise business on correct VAT treatment for new products or business streams
  • Review the current procedures for processing of invoices to highlight areas of potential VAT exposure
  • Obtain data for Customs calculations and assess reasonability
  • Raise any data errors and assist in correcting errors
  • Implement controls and reasonability tests
  • Review the processes in paying over of import duties
  • Resolve discrepancies from SARS statements
  • Maintain the Tax Compliance Register (issued by Pepkor Group Tax)
  • Obtain Tax Clearance Certificates from all Revenue Authorities and deal with any issues that may arise.

Stakeholder Management

  • Internal: Build strong relationships with FM’s and their teams, ensuring that all required changes (recons, tax, etc) are effected
  • External: Build strong relationships with Pepkor Group Tax and other Tax Managers in the Group, ensuring alignment
  • Effectively manage relationships with Revenue Authorities and in-country Consultants
  • Ensure current relationship with Specialty is maintained and improved
  • Effectively manage the relationships with in-country 3rd Party suppliers

General Accountant

  • Accurate verification and authorization of bank and EFT payments in a timely manner
  • Ad hoc tasks as required by Finance, such as (but not limited to):
  • Deal with historic queries
  • Be an important part of projects around sourcing structures, etc and the communication of the Tax risks associated with it.
  • Any other tasks and projects that the Business is involved in

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Essential:

  • 2-5 years relevant experience
  • Tax administration and compliance experience
  • Advanced level of MS Excel
  • Understanding of tax legislation
  • Experience in liaising with regulators on tax matters (e.g. audits/revenue authorities)

Preferred:

Experience in retail and listed environments

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Essential:

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Tax
  • CA(SA) qualification 

JOB RELATED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

KNOWLEDGE required:

  • Excellent knowledge of Corporate and Indirect Tax legislation
  • Knowledge of Accounting principles and practices
  • Knowledge of financial and management accounts reporting requirements
  • Knowledge of management accounts up to balance sheet
  • Knowledge of financial report writing and commentary
  • Knowledge of diverse business units

  • High Levels of Computer literacy – advanced Excel
