SQL Database Administrator
Job Description
Responsibilities:
Database Management:
- Install, configure, and maintain database management systems (DBMS) on Windows servers, including Oracle, My-SQL and Postgress.
- Monitor and optimize database performance, including query tuning and indexing.
- Implement and manage database backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and availability.
Security and Compliance:
- Configure and enforce database security policies and access controls.
- Monitor for security vulnerabilities and apply patches or updates as needed.
- Ensure databases comply with industry standards and regulations (e.g., GDPR, POPIA, HIPAA, etc).
Performance Monitoring and Tuning:
- Continuously monitor database performance using tools and techniques to identify and address performance bottlenecks.
- Optimize database queries and configurations to enhance efficiency and speed.
Troubleshooting and Support:
- Provide technical support and resolve database-related issues reported by users or identified through monitoring tools.
- Troubleshoot and resolve database errors, connectivity issues, and performance problems.
Data Management:
- Develop and maintain scripts for database maintenance, automation, and data migration tasks.
- Ensure data integrity and consistency across database systems.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain comprehensive documentation for database configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
- Generate and review reports on database performance, security, and usage.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with application developers, system administrators, and other IT staff to support database-related needs and projects.
- Provide training and support to end-users regarding database usage and best practices.
Compliance and Best Practices:
- Ensure that database management practices adhere to industry standards and regulatory requirements
- Stay current with emerging trends, tools, and best practices in database administration and Windows server management.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience. Knowledge of Windows Server operating systems, databases and related technologies.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator, Oracle Database Administrator) are advantageous.
- Proven experience as a Database Administrator, particularly in a Windows environment.
- Proficiency with database management systems such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL.
- Experience with database performance tuning, backup, and recovery.
- Familiarity with scripting languages such as PowerShell or SQL.
- Exposure to cloud technologies ie, AWS & Azure
