Quantity Surveyor
Job Description
PURPOSE OF ROLE
The Junior Quantity Surveyor provides essential support to the projects function through measurement, verification, and certification of materials, labour, and other cost components related to designs and drawings. You will provide contractual administration and financial management cost control support to the Project Manager and Senior Manager, ensuring that projects remain within budget and are delivered to the highest standards.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Measurement & BOQ Preparation
- Prepare detailed Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and conduct accurate take-offs for civil and building works
- Develop progress metrics spreadsheets for project tracking
- Prepare project budgets with attention to detail and accuracy
Cost Control & Reporting
- Monitor project costs and prepare comprehensive cost reports
- Report on Interim Payments Applications and Financial Progress
- Prepare and process final accounts
- Develop and maintain Cost Price Adjustment (CPA) documentation
Contract Management
- Support the review and administration of contracts, ensuring compliance with NEC3 contractual requirements
- Manage work progress payments and claims
- Prepare Valuation Interim Certificates
- Conduct re-measurements as required
Site-Based Support
- Conduct on-site measurements and verify subcontractor claims against actual work performed
- Measure and value Variation Orders (VOs)
- Process subcontractor payments
- Approve purchase requisitions triggered by change requests
Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers to obtain competitive quotes and ensure cost efficiency
- Interface with the finance department to generate project invoices
- Assist in resolving sub-contractor payment queries
- Support various internal departments including Legal, SHEQ, Project Controls, and HR
Risk Management
- Identify and report on cost variations, financial risks, and potential contract disputes
- Price change requests triggered and tracked in projects
- Ensure compliance with all company financial policies, procedures, and controls
Collaboration & Communication
- Work independently and within a diverse team environment
- Provide timely updates to project stakeholders
- Assist in the development of standardized documentation and templates
- Contribute to process improvements and updates
QUALIFICATION
- BSc or BTech in Quantity Surveying (or equivalent qualification)
- Registration with a recognized Quantity Surveying Professional Body (e.g., SACQSP) is an advantage
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 3-5 years post-qualification practical experience in relevant field
- Experience in Civil and Building engineering is beneficial
- Proven experience engaging directly with clients and managing stakeholder expectations
- Familiarity with cost control software and quantity surveying tools
- Experience in cost estimation, cost control, and contract administration.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS COMPETENCIES
Knowledge
- Extensive knowledge of Project Administration Fundamentals
- Basic knowledge of Project Management principles
- Good understanding of basic accounting practices
- Comprehensive understanding of construction contracts, particularly NEC3
- Understanding of the requirements and implications of industrial projects
Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for cost management and reporting
- Knowledge of CCS software
- Strong measurement and take-off capabilities
- Ability to prepare BOQs, cost reports, and final accounts
- Working knowledge of NEC3 contracts (other contract experience is an advantage)
- Competence with computer systems (IFS, Project Management Collaboration Platforms)
- Clear communication abilities
- Technical competence in quantity surveying methodologies
