About the role

The Department of Interior Design & Décor seeks to appoint an outstanding person with a keen interest in teaching interior design – someone who can make an efficient and lasting impact on the academic and creative life of the Academy. 

The appointee would also be contributing to cross-disciplinary projects in innovation and teaching. The applicant will be able to share their vision for contributing to a programme that brings together the different strengths already present in the Academy, whilst developing new areas of research that are both locally and globally relevant.

This role profile is indicative, not prescriptive, and the balance of duties will be in accordance with the employment contract.

Principal duties and responsibilities

Teaching and learning support

  • Design, develop, and deliver modules across levels, including new qualifications, ensuring compliance with SAQA, CHE, and Academy standards.
  • Create and maintain virtual learning environments and update course content regularly.
  • Employ innovative teaching methods to engage students and enhance learning.
  • Teach and assess practical skills, software proficiency, and theoretical knowledge at diploma level.
  • Contribute to departmental administration and professional engagement.

Planning and managing resources

  • Plan and deliver module outcomes in compliance with regulations.
  • Support departmental management in areas such as budget planning and business strategies.
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives.
  • Effectively manage resources for research and consultancy modules.
  • Ensure quality standards are maintained while balancing teaching, research, and administrative duties.

Competencies and behavioural attributes

  • Passion and expertise in design and décor practices.
  • Proficiency in written, verbal, and academic communication in English and Afrikaans.
  • Capability to teach software, theory, and practical applications across diverse design concepts.
  • Ability to monitor student performance, provide feedback, and coach professionally.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and meticulous planning and administrative abilities.

Expertise

  • Recognition as an authority in the field of interior design.
  • In-depth knowledge of the discipline, including software, technical knowledge, and design.
  • A proven record of collaboration and teaching initiative at tertiary level.

Liaison and networking

  • Engage in internal networks, such as subcommittees, and develop links with external organisations, employers, and professional bodies.
  • Build external networks with moderators, suppliers, and manufacturers to enhance teaching and industry connections.

Initiative, problem-solving, and decision-making

  • Resolve issues affecting the delivery of qualifications within the educational programme.
  • Make decisions regarding operational aspects of the programme.
  • Support decision-making for related curricula.
  • Contribute to the strategic development of new courses or areas of activity.

Minimum qualification requirements

  • A soundtrack record of interior design industry engagement.
  • National diploma or degree obtained from an accredited educational institute.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit; proficiency in Adobe Suite is advantageous.
  • Previous experience in educational training or assessment is advantageous.
