Job Description


Purpose Statement

The Flight Operations Manager is a senior person identified by the Accountable Manager, in conjunction with Group Air Support input. The Flight Operations Manager’s contractual authority has been granted to ensure that all activities undertaken by Wilderness Air is carried out in accordance with the Flight Operations Manual in terms of the applicable requirements prescribed by the Civil Aviation Authority and the Wilderness Air, Air Service License.

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaise with the Civil Aviation Authority.
  • Attend Aviation Legislation and Industry related meetings.
  • Ensure that all types of flight operations in providing the air service are conducted in a safe and reliable manner and within the parameters permitted by the Air Service License listed in the Management Plan.
  • Oversee all operational planning and briefings, as well as all flight related duties and functions of the aircrew.
  • Ensure that the provisions of the Flight Operations Manual are fully complied with in respect to flight operations.
  • Ensure that all particulars pertaining to a flight are handed to the Pilot-in-Command of the aircraft in a written/printed format to prevent misunderstanding (i.e. pilot briefing).
  • Ensuring that 90 day records are completed at the end of each days flying
  • Actively lead the airstrip inspection and assessment process in liaison with Wilderness Safaris operations and other 3rd party destinations as required.
  • Oversee the duty roster and ensure standby air crew are available in consultation with the Chief Pilot.
  • Interrogates flight and duty periods of the aircrew under his or her control.
  • Interrogates the record of the licenses, ratings, compulsory training and medical status of the aforesaid aircrew.
  • Overall supervision of the aircrew in their allocated flight duties.
  • Oversee all flight logistical planning e.g. fuel requirements, cash advances, accommodation, road transport, catering, over-flight clearances, landing permissions, arrival/departure slots, passenger support, baggage handling, aircrew visas, customs and immigration procedures, etc.
  • Maintaining and improving the Wilderness Air database on airfields.
  • Maintain and update the Wilderness Air Flight Operations Manual, the AIC’s, the AIP’s, NOTAM’s and relevant aviation legislation.
  • Oversees the updating process of the Wilderness Air Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) in conjunction with the Chief Pilot.
  • Maintains the approved flight planning programme e.g. Schedwin etc.
  • Attend and contribute to Management and monthly Maintenance meetings.
  • Liaise with the Aviation Safety Manager on operational safety matters having a bearing on the air service being operated.
  • Liaise with the Quality Assurance Manager on compliance matters having a bearing on the air service being operated.
  • Liaise with the Maintenance Manager on technical matters having a bearing on flight operations.
