Associate Professor

Minimum Requirements:

  • A PhD / Doctorate qualification in Chemical Engineering 
  • A Degree in Chemical Engineering (e.g, BTech, BEng, BScEng, Advanced Diploma, MTech, MSc, or MEng).
  • At least 7 years of teaching experience / professional experience. 
  • A minimum of seven DHET-accredited publications or creative outputs over the preceding three years.
  • Successful postgraduate supervision of at least two Master’s students and one Doctorate student.
  • The standard achieved in each of the abovementioned must be of a high level.
  • Recipient of grant awards
  • Good communication and lecturing skills.
  • A strong passion for teaching and research.
  • Evidence of leadership in community organizations and participation in activities in the wider community relating specifically to the academic discipline of the candidate and/or involvement in significant activities in professional, cultural, religious, sporting, development, and other fields.
  • Bibliometrics to evaluate the quality of research output.
  • Registrable as a professional engineer or engineering technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

 Summary of Duties:

  • Teach Chemical Engineering subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 
  • Supervision of postgraduate projects and postgraduate students. 
  • Development of learning materials for different courses.
  • Actively involved in research and research activities. 
  • Active participation in industrial projects. 
  • Knowledge of online learning software, g. Moodle, Blackboard, Teams.
  • Participation in community engagement projects. 
  • Assist with administrative duties as delegated. 
  • Any other duties as prescribed by the Head of Department. 
  • Registered or qualifies for registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

 Additional requirements 

  • Exceptional knowledge of his or her subject matter/discipline.
  • Excellent classroom and tutorial performance.
  • Effective utilization of innovative teaching and assessment methods.
  • Very good communication and human relations skills.
  • Excellent performance as an academic advisor who encourages active learning among students.
  • Effective design and development of curriculum.
  • Papers presented at subject conferences (nationally or internationally).
  • Examination of postgraduate students and other indications of peer-reviewed activities.
  • Management of research projects/programs.
  • Recognition by professional and industrial communities.
  • Initiation of high-level courses, development of education methodology, advanced seminars, etc.
  • Proven achievement in professional research, creative activities, scholarly writings, and participation in professional activities.
