Job description

To conceptualise, produce, shoot and edit multimedia pieces for publication on digital platforms. To assist in the conceptualisation of major projects, providing input on treatments and delivery mechanisms. To innovate in the multimedia space, devising new and untried treatments and approaches.

To cover daily news, both hard and light, and to conceptualise and work on original feature pieces. Take full accountability and responsibility by executing all specified functions within the role and adhering to processes, policies and procedures and always abiding by the company’s values.

Key outputs: 

• Knowledge of digital-specific treatments of news stories
• Suggest best digital treatments for feature stories
• Identify and create stories in line with editorial
• Pitch multimedia ideas about original stories
• Keep abreast with major stories in the general news space
• Maintain a good contact base with the ability to arrange interviews
• Ability to do voiceovers for stories
• Creative and technically strong when it comes to filming and editing
• Film and edit multimedia packages
• Take photos of newsmakers and news events
• Ability to source necessary visual material
• Record and edit video footage to create audio-visual content
• Package multimedia content
• Ability to use social media to disseminate news content
• Contribute to the growth of the Eyewitness News YouTube channel audience
• Stay updated on multimedia trends, technology, and best practices
• The ability to file stories for radio news bulletins is highly advantageous

Educational qualifications 

• Matric or equivalent
• Relevant tertiary qualification
• A valid driver’s licence

Required knowledge and experience

• At least three years of experience in a professional news environment
• In-depth knowledge of news and current affairs landscape especially in South Africa
• Present a portfolio of work in multimedia journalism
• A good understanding of YouTube, its analytics and restrictions, and proficiency in other social media platforms.

Required skills

• Computer literacy skills
• Excellent skills in filming, video editing, photography
• Technical camera expertise, especially with DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and other multimedia production tools.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent visual literacy
• Storyboarding ability
• Demonstrable knowledge of social media, and the role multimedia plays in social media
• Ability to write and script for video and visual social media
• Infographic design ability is highly advantageous
• Livestream knowledge and experience are highly advantageous
• Demonstrable knowledge of After Effects is highly advantageous
