Job description
To produce exclusive, relevant, compelling, and factually correct news stories across Eyewitness News’s various platforms including radio, video and online.
Key outputs
Provide general news reports on EWN’s radio platforms by meeting specified news requirements:
- Ensure the news product is 100% accurate, up to date and consistent by covering all stories assigned by editors or news desk editors on a half hourly basis
- Ensure depth and texture of news products by providing insight into and analysis of stipulated news stories daily
- Ensure the news product is 100% accurate, up to date and consistent by filing radio news reports on a half-hourly basis
- Cover breaking and developing news stories by crossing live into news bulletins or talk radio programming according to specified timeframes
Provide news content on EWN’s digital platforms by meeting specified news requirements:
- Ensure that breaking and developing news is reflected on EWN social media platforms by tweeting live from news stories and scenes according to specified timeframes
- Supply video content to the online team by providing pieces-to-camera and Q&A’s for multimedia purposes on a daily basis
- Provide depth and texture to the brand’s website, by writing articles regularly.
- Ensure that all decision-makers in the newsroom are aware of any developing and breaking news stories by alerting the news desks and editors to the latest changes and developments as they occur.
Generate exclusive news content through the utilisation of sources and information gathered:
- Source and conceptualise stories on a daily basis by identifying possible news angles provided by sources, contacts and or through general news.
- Provide unique content by generating a minimum of 1 news story per month that is “own” or “exclusive” to EWN
Provide balanced and comprehensive content by working with programming daily:
- Augment EWN coverage and provide shows with information by conducting Q&A’s with shows that are informative, engaging and easy to understand on a daily basis
- Assist the programming department in arranging interviews with newsmakers by putting internal stakeholders in contact with sources according to specified timeframes.
Educational qualifications
- Diploma/Degree in Journalism or relevant work experience
Required knowledge and experience
- Minimum of five years of experience
- In-depth knowledge of news and current affairs landscape
- Extensive contact base
- Passionate about news and setting the news agenda in the industry
- Impeccable general and current affairs knowledge
- Knowledge of recording and editing audio
- Solid knowledge of working on social media platforms
- Digital editing knowledge
Required skills
- Excellent reading and writing skills in English
- Excellent interviewing skills
- Ability to meet half hourly deadlines
- Have a keen “news sense”
- Able to deliver under minimal supervision
- Willing to learn all aspects of EWN – from anchoring to reporting to online
