Requirements :

  • Basic medical degree (MBBCh or equivalent) qualification. Valid registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner at the time of starting employment. Proof of current paid registration with HPCSA (for 2023). Advanced life support courses must be current by the time of starting the position (allowance of 3 months post-expiration): ACLS; PALS/APLS; ATLS/ITLS/EMATT. Prior experience of 6 months in an Emergency Department.
    Grade 1 – Less than 5 years relevant experience as medical officer.
    Grade 2 – At least 5 years, but less than 10 years, relevant experience
    Grade 3 -10 years and more relevant experience
    Beneficial:
    DipPEC and/or DA and/or DCH and/or FCEM Part 1 exams will be an advantage. Neonatal resuscitation course; core Emergency Point of Care Ultrasound; and core e-POCUS certification will be an advantage. Previous experience in Paediatrics will be an advantage.

Duties :

  • • Part-time clinical work in the Emergency Department
    • Minimum of 65 hours/month; maximum of 80 hours/month
    • Three to four 12-hour after-hours shifts: these after-hours shifts are on weekends and/or weekday nights.
    • Remaining hours made up during the week.
    • Shift work in the Emergency Department
    • Manage a variety of emergencies that present to the Emergency Department, with a significant focus on Paediatric Emergency Medicine + Women’s Health emergencies.
    • Promote evidence-based patient care.
    • Clinical supervision and training of junior staff.
    • Participate in departmental academic and research activities.
    • Administrative duties pertinent to the practice of Emergency Medicine (including medico-legal documentation)
