ADU Data-Driven Decision-Making Lecturer (Full-Time)

The Academic Development Unit (ADU) within the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment at the University of the Witwatersrand invites applications for the position of the Data driven Decision Making Lecturer. This is a full time lecturer position housed at the ADU.

Role Overview: 

The Lecturer in Data-Driven Decision Making (DDDM) at the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment will be crucial in integrating DDDM across all study levels in response to industry demands for data proficiency. This role involves designing and delivering a progressive curriculum from basic data handling to advanced analytics, ensuring it aligns with industry trends and enhances student employability. By working closely with faculty schools and industry partners, the lecturer will update courses with real-world applications and lead practical initiatives like annual hackathons and competitions. This position represents a strategic effort to equip students with essential skills for the digital age, preparing them to lead in global markets and directly influencing the future of engineering education.

Key Responsibilities:  

¿Designing and teaching DDDM courses for first to fourth year students that cover data collection, visualization, statistics, machine learning, and optimization.

¿Incorporate of teaching technology to enable lecturing of large classes (> 300 students).

¿Incorporate of Blended learning approaches into the teaching, learning and assessment of courses.

¿Developing courses in Data-Driven Decision Making in collaboration with faculty schools and industry partners. 

¿Leading a team of teaching assistants in delivering DDDM courses. 

¿Overseeing the organization of a faculty hackathon and annual DDDM competitions. 

¿Collaborating on curriculum development and enhancements with faculty schools, university stakeholders as well as industry partners to integrate real-world problem-solving skills into coursework.

Qualifications and Experience: 

¿A PhD degree in Engineering. 

¿A minimum of three years of experience in teaching, curriculum development, administration, coordination, setting and marking course assessments, managing large teams of tutors, and developing interventions, particularly in ICT-related courses. Additionally, proficient use of teaching technologies to monitor and provide academic support to a large number of students (over 300). 

¿Demonstrated ability to incorporate practical, industry-relevant content into academic programs. 

¿Experience in blended learning, which includes a combination of face-to-face teaching, interactive teaching technologies, and use of online platforms such as Panopto, is desirable.
