What the job is:

This is a casual cashier position with a fixed-term contract at Dis-Chem Pharmacies in Market Square, Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape. Your main role will be to help customers at the checkout while ensuring every transaction is accurate and follows company rules to avoid mistakes or fraud.

What you will do:

As a cashier, you will handle customer transactions using Dis-Chem’s operating system. This includes scanning items, processing payments like cash, cards, vouchers, and coupons, and ensuring all sales follow company policies. You will also manage loyalty cards for different partners like Discovery Health, Medihelp, and ABSA Rewards. Keeping the cash safe and secure is very important, so you will deposit money in the drop safe and never discuss cash details with anyone except management.

You will need to greet customers professionally and handle their complaints or compliments by reporting them to your supervisor. It’s also your job to know about current sales and promotions, help customers with returns or exchanges (if allowed), and ensure the checkout area stays safe for both customers and staff. You will follow Dis-Chem’s 5-star communication rules, which means being friendly, helpful, and clear in everything you do. If you notice anything suspicious, like unusual behavior or potential theft, you must report it to management right away.

What you need:

To apply for this job, you need to have completed Matric (Grade 12) and have at least 6 months of experience working as a cashier or with a till. You should be comfortable using computers, especially Microsoft Office, and have good math skills since you’ll be handling money every day. Strong English skills are a must, both for talking to customers and writing reports. Basic customer service experience is also important because you’ll be interacting with people all day.

Other important skills include being accurate and detail-oriented, so you don’t make mistakes with prices or transactions. You should be presentable, trustworthy, and able to handle stress well. Since this is a retail job, you must be willing to work during busy hours, which could include evenings and weekends. A third language would be a plus, but it’s not required. You’ll also need reliable transport or to live close to the store in Plettenberg Bay.
