Job Description
What the job is: This is a casual cashier position with a fixed-term contract at the Dis-Chem Pharmacies store in Canal Walk, Cape Town. The company is looking for someone to join their team to help with customer service at the checkout. This role is part of a talent pool, meaning you may be called in when the store needs extra help, but it does not guarantee permanent employment.
What you will do: As a cashier, your main job will be to assist customers at the point of sale while ensuring they have a great shopping experience. You will process all customer transactions using the Dis-Chem system, following company rules to avoid mistakes and prevent fraud. This includes handling cash, cards, vouchers, coupons, and other payment methods. You will also manage loyalty cards for different partners like Discovery Health Care, Medihelp Lifestage, and others.
You will be responsible for keeping the cash drawer secure, counting money carefully, and ensuring all transactions are accurate. If a customer has a complaint or compliment, you will report it to your supervisor. You will also need to stay updated on current sales and promotions, help customers with returns or exchanges when allowed, and ensure the store follows all security rules. Your job also includes keeping the checkout area clean and organized, and being alert for any suspicious activity.
What you need: To apply for this job, you need to have completed Matric (Grade 12). Some experience working as a cashier or with a till is helpful, even if it’s just six months. You should be comfortable using computers, especially Microsoft Office, and have good math skills. Strong English communication is a must, and basic customer service experience is important.
You must be willing to work during retail hours, which can include evenings, weekends, and holidays. You should also have reliable transport or live close to the store. Being a South African citizen with a clean criminal and credit record is required. Helpful skills include being accurate, detail-oriented, trustworthy, and able to handle problems calmly.
What you will get: This is a contract position, and the salary will be based on what is standard for the market. While this role does not guarantee permanent employment, it gives you a chance to gain experience and potentially move into a full-time position at Dis-Chem in the future. The company values diversity and encourages applications from people with disabilities.
