Job Description

What the job is: This job is for a Lead STEM Mentor who will work in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, as part of the Engen Maths & Science Schools Programme (EMSS). The role is perfect for someone who teaches Mathematics, Physical Sciences, or English and wants to help students outside the classroom. You will lead a regional STEM center, mentor high-performing learners, and support their academic growth.

What you will do: You will provide weekly in-person academic support by leading one 2-hour session each week, rotating between schools in the Durban area. Your job will include teaching learners how to study effectively, develop good learning habits, and work together in groups. You will also track their progress online, identify students who need extra help, and follow up with them to keep them on track. As the leader of the center, you will organize venues, manage assessments, and help with special events like Winter School and awards ceremonies. Finally, you will keep detailed records of attendance, progress, and any issues that need attention.

What you need: To apply, you must be a qualified teacher with a B. Ed or PGCE in the Further Education and Training (FET) phase. You need to teach Mathematics, Physical Sciences, or English at a high school level and have at least 3 years of teaching experience. Your teaching registration with SACE must be valid and up to date. You should have a clean criminal record and a clear Child Protection Register screening. The job requires you to travel weekly within the Durban region, so you will need your own vehicle. You must also be comfortable using digital tools, managing events, and balancing this role with your current teaching job. Permission from your current employer is required.

What you will get: This is a fixed-term contract for 12 months, running from January 2027 to December 2027. You will work part-time, about 7 to 10 hours per week, earning a monthly stipend of R10,000. Additionally, you will receive a quarterly bonus of R4,000 if you meet performance targets. Travel costs will be reimbursed for trips over 100 kilometers round-trip. You will also get access to technology tools and the chance to be part of a well-known STEM program. The role offers professional growth, visibility in your community, and the opportunity to make a real difference in students' lives.
