Job Description

Dis-Chem Pharmacies in Platinum Park, Polokwane, is looking for a Dispensary Support Assistant to join their team. This is a fixed-term position designed to train learners who want to become registered pharmacist assistants. The role involves completing a learner basic pharmacist assistant course, which teaches the basics of pharmacy work and ensures quality learning on the job. Once you qualify as a basic pharmacist assistant, you may be offered permanent employment.

As a Dispensary Support Assistant, you will help with various tasks under the supervision of a pharmacist. This includes selling medicines listed as Schedule 1, assisting with preparing and packing medicines according to approved instructions, and keeping the dispensary clean and organized. You will also help manage stock, check expiry dates, and assist customers with their medication needs.

You will learn to read and understand prescriptions accurately, follow legal requirements set by the South African Pharmaceutical Council, and ensure all medications are checked and signed off by a pharmacist. Additional responsibilities include handling call center scripts, following up with patients about their prescriptions, and assisting with authorizations for chronic, HIV, and cancer medications. You will also report any stock issues or errors to the dispensary manager and help receive new stock according to company rules.

To apply, you must have completed Matric (Grade 12) with at least 50% in Pure Mathematics, Life Science, or Physical Science, and an overall average of 50%. You should also pass a proficiency test that allows you to register with the Pharmacy Council as a learner basic assistant. Good communication skills in English and another language, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure are essential.

You must be a South African citizen with a valid Medical Examination (MIE), a clear criminal record, and a clean credit record. Computer skills and basic numerical abilities are also important. Experience in retail or front shop roles at Dis-Chem is a plus but not required.

This position offers a market-related salary for the fixed-term contract. Once you complete your training and qualify as a basic pharmacist assistant, you may be considered for permanent employment.
