What the job is
This is a 3-year contract position for a Beamline Senior Instrumentation Researcher at the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) in the North West province. The role focuses on developing and improving specialized research instruments used in neutron beamline facilities at research reactors. The job involves leading research projects, improving scientific methods, and expanding the use of advanced technologies in this field.
What you will do
You will plan and conduct independent research to design, develop, and maintain specialized instruments for neutron beamline facilities. You will write technical reports, publish research findings in journals, and present results at conferences and meetings. You will train colleagues and students, supervise postgraduate research, and contribute to team projects. You will also manage project budgets, secure research funding, and ensure compliance with safety, health, environment, and quality (SHEQ) standards. Additionally, you will support strategic partnerships with industry and scientific organizations.
What you need
You need at least a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, though a Master’s degree is preferred. You must have 5 to 7 years of experience in a specialized engineering field, with 1 to 2 years in scientific project coordination. Strong skills in designing high-precision motion systems, radiological shielding, and 3D modeling (e.g., SolidWorks) are required. Knowledge of programming languages like Python, C, or C++ and experience with structural analysis software (e.g., ANSYS) will be beneficial. You should also have excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills.
