What the job is
This is a full-time position for a Biodiversity Officer at the Border Management Authority, based in Ramatlabama, North West. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with biodiversity laws at South African borders, particularly for shipments involving endangered species.
What you will do
You will inspect shipments related to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) and verify permits and documents at border entry points. You will check pre-booked CITES shipments and their permits, approve compliant permits to release goods legally, and verify TOPS (Threatened or Protected Species) permits. You will identify and report any non-compliant shipments, permits, or suspected offenses, and assist in joint operations with law enforcement. You will also answer questions from clients about permits and compliance, keep accurate records of inspections, and submit required reports on time. Additionally, you will follow approved procedures for biodiversity compliance and enforcement.
What you need
You must have a Grade 12 certificate and a Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 6) in Biological Sciences, Botany, Zoology, Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, or a related field. At least three years of experience in biodiversity management, environmental compliance, or conservation is required. Experience with CITES or TOPS permits, compliance inspections, and environmental legislation is a plus. You should be able to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and public holidays, and travel to different ports of entry. Knowledge of relevant laws, such as the Border Management Authority Act and the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, is essential.
