What the job is
This is a full-time position for a Biodiversity Officer at the Border Management Authority in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with laws related to the trade and protection of endangered species, particularly under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) and TOPS (Threatened or Protected Species) regulations.
What you will do
You will inspect shipments related to CITES and TOPS at ports of entry to check if they follow the law. This includes verifying permits and supporting documents for these shipments. You will approve compliant permits to allow legal release of goods and identify any non-compliant shipments, permits, or documents, reporting suspected offenses. You will also support joint operations with law enforcement, answer questions from clients and stakeholders, and keep accurate records of inspections and compliance reports. Additionally, you will implement standard procedures for biodiversity compliance and enforcement.
What you need
You must have a Grade 12 certificate and a Bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 6) in Biological Sciences, Botany, Zoology, Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, or a related field. At least three years of experience in biodiversity management, environmental compliance, or conservation is required. Knowledge of relevant laws, such as the Border Management Authority Act, the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, CITES, and TOPS regulations, is essential. Experience in conducting compliance inspections, permit administration, and policy implementation is also needed. Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, public holidays, and travel to different ports of entry is required.
