What the job is
This is a full-time position for a Biodiversity Officer (Production) with the Border Management Authority in Cape Town, Western Cape. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with biodiversity laws, particularly related to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) regulations at Ports of Entry.
What you will do
You will inspect shipments related to CITES and verify permits and supporting documents at Ports of Entry. You will check pre-booked CITES shipments and their permits, endorse compliant permits to allow legal release of goods, and verify TOPS permits where needed. You will identify and report non-compliant shipments, permits, or suspected offenses, and refer them for further action. You will also support joint operations with law enforcement, respond to inquiries about permits, and maintain accurate records of inspections and compliance. Additionally, you will compile reports, implement standard procedures, and follow operational directives for biodiversity compliance.
What you need
You must have a Grade 12 certificate and an undergraduate degree (NQF Level 6) in Biological Sciences, Botany, Zoology, Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, or a related field. At least three years of experience in biodiversity management, environmental compliance, or conservation is required. Experience in conducting compliance inspections, administering CITES or TOPS permits, and interpreting environmental laws is preferred. You must be flexible with working hours, including overtime, weekends, and public holidays, and be willing to travel to designated Ports of Entry. Knowledge of the Border Management Authority Act, CITES, TOPS regulations, and biodiversity compliance procedures is essential.
