What the job is
This is a full-time position for a Biodiversity Officer specializing in CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) at the Border Management Authority in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with biodiversity laws at ports of entry, particularly for shipments involving protected species.
What you will do
You will inspect shipments related to CITES and verify permits and documents to ensure they meet legal requirements. You will check pre-booked CITES shipments and their permits, approve compliant permits to allow legal release of goods, and verify TOPS (Threatened or Protected Species) permits when needed. You will identify and report any non-compliant shipments, permits, or suspected offenses, and work with law enforcement on joint operations. You will also answer questions from clients about CITES, TOPS, and biodiversity rules, keep accurate records of inspections, and submit required reports on time. Additionally, you will follow approved procedures for biodiversity compliance and enforcement.
What you need
You must have a Grade 12 certificate and a bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 6) in Biological Sciences, Botany, Zoology, Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, or a related field. At least three years of experience in biodiversity management, environmental compliance, or conservation is required. Experience with CITES or TOPS permits, conducting compliance inspections, and implementing environmental laws is a plus. You should be able to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and public holidays, and travel to different ports of entry as needed. An Environmental Management Inspector (EMI) designation is an advantage.
