What the job is
This is a full-time position for a Biodiversity Specialist focused on CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) at the Border Management Authority in Centurion, Gauteng. The role involves ensuring compliance with biodiversity laws at ports of entry in the Eastern Region.
What you will do
You will provide expert advice on biodiversity laws, including the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act and CITES regulations. Your duties include managing CITES permits, identifying species, conducting compliance inspections, and supporting wildlife trade investigations. You will also monitor compliance trends, prepare technical reports, and coordinate with government agencies and conservation authorities. Additionally, you will train staff, represent the authority at forums, and ensure consistent application of biodiversity policies.
What you need
You must have a Bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 7) in Biological Sciences, Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, or a related field. At least five years of experience in biodiversity management, environmental compliance, or a similar role is required. You should be familiar with biodiversity legislation, species identification, and permit administration. Strong skills in compliance monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and technical training are essential. A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel nationally and internationally are also required.
