What the job is
This job is for an IP Legal Counsel at Aspen Pharma Group, based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The role involves managing and protecting the company’s global intellectual property, such as trademarks, domain names, and related rights. The position also includes providing legal advice on IP matters, supporting business decisions, and ensuring compliance with laws and company policies.
What you will do
You will manage Aspen’s global trademark portfolio, including filing, renewing, and maintaining trademarks, as well as ensuring the accuracy of IP records. You will research trademark availability, provide legal opinions, and draft or review IP agreements, such as licensing deals. You will monitor for misuse of Aspen’s trademarks and take action to enforce IP rights. You will also stay updated on changes in IP laws and advise the company on how these changes may affect its portfolio. Additionally, you will support legal projects, improve IP processes, and contribute to cross-functional initiatives within the legal team.
What you need
You must have a legal degree (preferably an LLB) and be an admitted Attorney in South Africa. A postgraduate qualification in IP or trademark law is a plus. You should have 5 to 10 years of experience as a lawyer, with a focus on intellectual property, including managing international trademark portfolios. Experience in trademark litigation, commercial IP transactions, and the pharmaceutical industry is beneficial. Strong research, writing, and analytical skills are required, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a global legal team.
