What the job is
The Desmond Tutu Health Foundation is looking for a Counsellor to join their team at the Emavundleni Research Clinical Site in Crossroads. This is a 12-month contract position. The foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on research, treatment, and prevention of HIV and related infections in Southern Africa. This role is a great opportunity for someone who wants to contribute to important health work in the community.
What you will do
You will provide counselling to participants at the research site. Your tasks will include conducting informed consent sessions, HIV testing and counselling (HCT), and administering study questionnaires. You will also assist with general research support, translation, and administrative tasks. Additionally, you will educate participants and the community about HIV, infectious diseases, and sexual and reproductive health. You will help with data collection, maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring all study records are accurate and up to date. You may also need to make phone calls or home visits to remind participants about their appointments.
What you need
You must have a Grade 12 certificate and at least 2 years of experience conducting informed consent processes in a clinical research environment. You need an HIV Counselling certificate and a GCP (Good Clinical Practice) certificate. Knowledge of HIV, sexual and reproductive health, and clinical trials is required. You should be computer literate, with strong communication skills in both English and IsiXhosa. You must be able to work under pressure, maintain confidentiality, and work both independently and as part of a team. Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends, is also necessary.
