What the job is
This is a full-time position for a Biodiversity Specialist focusing on CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) at the Border Management Authority in Centurion, Gauteng. The role involves ensuring compliance with laws that protect wildlife and plants, especially at ports of entry in the Southern Region.
What you will do
You will provide expert advice on biodiversity laws, including CITES and the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act. You will coordinate and support compliance activities at ports of entry, such as issuing permits, identifying species, and conducting inspections. You will also handle complex cases like wildlife trade investigations, permit issues, and seizures. Additionally, you will train staff, monitor compliance trends, and work with government agencies, conservation authorities, and law enforcement to enforce biodiversity laws. You will represent the Border Management Authority at meetings and forums and help develop regional biodiversity strategies.
What you need
You must have a Grade 12 certificate and a Bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 7) in Biological Sciences, Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, or a related field. You need at least five years of experience in biodiversity management, environmental compliance, or a similar role after completing your degree. Experience with CITES, TOPS Regulations, and other biodiversity laws is required. You should be skilled in species identification, permit administration, and compliance monitoring. A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel nationally and internationally are also required. Having an Environmental Management Inspector (EMI) designation is a plus.
