What the job is
This is a position for a Multimedia Journalist at Caxton Local Media, working for Northglen News in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Northglen News is a well-known community newspaper that covers areas like Durban North, uMhlanga, La Lucia, and surrounding regions. The role involves creating news content for both print and digital platforms, including websites and social media.
What you will do
You will break and follow up on local, regional, and national news stories that matter to the community. You will generate original story ideas and conduct in-depth reporting on public interest issues. Covering breaking news quickly and accurately is a key part of the job. You will report on crime, courts, municipal affairs, and community issues. Building strong relationships with sources and community contacts is essential. You will produce engaging written content, photographs, videos, reels, and soundbites for both print and digital platforms. You will publish and update news online in a timely manner and use SEO principles to improve digital content. Monitoring social media and other news sources for potential leads is also required. You will ensure all content follows the Press Code and Caxton’s editorial standards and work closely with the editorial and digital teams.
What you need
You must have a valid degree or diploma in Journalism and at least five years of newsroom experience with a proven track record. Excellent written and spoken English skills are required, and the ability to speak other languages is a plus. Strong news judgment, writing, research, interviewing, and fact-checking skills are essential. Experience in covering crime, courts, municipal affairs, and community news is important. You should be a confident photographer and able to produce short-form video and multimedia content. Knowledge of social media platforms and digital-first journalism, including SEO and online audience behavior, is necessary. A valid driver’s licence and your own reliable vehicle are required. Good knowledge of the North Durban community and local contacts will be an advantage.
