What the job is

This is a position for a Multimedia Journalist at Caxton Local Media, working for Northglen News in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Northglen News is a well-known community newspaper that serves areas like Durban North, uMhlanga, La Lucia, and surrounding regions. The role involves creating news content for both print and digital platforms, including websites and social media.

What you will do

You will break and follow up on local, regional, and national news stories that matter to the community. You will generate original story ideas and conduct in-depth reporting on issues of public interest. You will cover breaking news quickly and accurately, including crime, courts, municipal affairs, and community events. You will produce written articles, photographs, videos, reels, and other multimedia content. You will also publish and update news online, use SEO techniques to improve digital content, and monitor social media and other sources for potential news leads. Additionally, you will ensure all content follows the Press Code and Caxton’s editorial standards.

What you need

You must have a valid degree or diploma in Journalism and at least five years of experience in a newsroom. Strong written and spoken English skills are required, and knowledge of other languages is a plus. You should have excellent news judgment, strong writing, research, interviewing, and fact-checking abilities. Experience in covering crime, courts, and municipal affairs is essential. You must be able to take photographs and create short videos and other multimedia content. A valid driver’s license and your own reliable vehicle are required. Knowledge of the North Durban community and local contacts is an advantage.
