Northglen News, a well-known community newspaper in Durban, is looking for a skilled and passionate Multimedia Journalist. The company, part of Caxton Local Media, serves areas like Durban North, uMhlanga, La Lucia, and Glenwood. They publish a weekly print edition and have a strong online presence, sharing daily news on their website and social media. This role is for someone who loves journalism and wants to tell stories that matter to the local community.
What you will do
You will break news and follow up on local, regional, and national stories that are important to readers. You will come up with original story ideas and dig deep into issues that affect the community. Your work will include covering crime, courts, local government, and community events. You will also take photos, shoot videos, and create content for social media. Additionally, you will publish news quickly online, use SEO to improve visibility, and ensure all content follows ethical journalism standards. Collaboration with the editorial and digital teams will be key to growing the newspaper’s online audience.
What you need
You must have a diploma or degree in Journalism and at least five years of experience in a newsroom. Strong English writing and speaking skills are essential, and knowing other languages is a plus. You should have excellent news judgment, research, interviewing, and fact-checking abilities. Experience in covering crime, courts, and local news is required. You must also be comfortable taking photos, creating videos, and using social media. A valid driver’s license and your own car are necessary, and knowing the North Durban community well is an advantage.
