What the job is

This is a permanent PHP Developer position based in Cape Town, Western Cape, offered by E-Merge IT Recruitment. You will join a dynamic Revenue Systems team to work on secure and scalable PHP-based solutions that support business growth.

What you will do

You will take full ownership of a key PHP platform and become the internal technical expert after receiving knowledge from external partners. Your tasks will include developing, maintaining, and improving secure and high-performance web applications. You will monitor system performance, manage incidents, and continuously optimize the platform. Additionally, you will handle system updates, dependencies, and security vulnerabilities. You will also design and deliver new features in collaboration with Product and Delivery teams, translate business needs into technical solutions, and optimize MySQL or PostgreSQL databases. Building and maintaining secure RESTful API integrations and promoting best practices in testing, documentation, and CI/CD are also part of the role. You will provide technical guidance and share knowledge within the engineering team.

What you need

You must have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. You need at least 5 years of commercial PHP development experience, with strong knowledge of PHP 8.0+ and frameworks like Laravel or Symfony. Experience with both modern and legacy PHP codebases is required. You should also have strong skills in MySQL or PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimization, and ORM tools like Eloquent or Doctrine. Familiarity with RESTful API development, API security methods (OAuth2, API Keys, JWT), Git, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile/Scrum environments is essential.

What you will get

This is a permanent, hybrid role offering a salary of up to R800,000 per year, negotiable based on your experience. The position allows for some remote work, giving you flexibility in how you manage your tasks.
