Job Description


Purpose Statement

The Chief Pilot is a senior person identified by the Accountable Manager, in conjunction with Group Air Support input. The Chief Pilot’s contractual authority has been granted to ensure that all activities undertaken by Wilderness Air are carried out in accordance with the Flight Operations Manual in terms of the applicable requirements prescribed by the Civil Aviation Authority and the Wilderness Air, Air Service License.

 

Key Accountabilities

The Chief Pilot is Accountable for the full and effective control of Wilderness Air Pilots which includes but not limited to, the safe, efficient, legal and correct conduct of Pilots.

Maintaining a superior liaison mechanism with the Accountable Manager, Operations Manager, Maintenance Manager, Training Manager, Safety Manager and Quality Manager for any matters affecting the flight aspects Wilderness Air Flights.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Liaise with the Civil Aviation Authority.
  2. Attend Aviation Legislation and Industry related meetings.
  3. Conduct or appoint senior pilots on initial route surveys; establish route limitations and route procedures.
  4. Conduct On-Line standardisation Check and Route Checking of the pilots as required by the Training Manager to improve standards of safety and efficiency.
  5. Actively partake in the airstrip inspection and assessment process.
  6. Ensure that the pilots are sufficient in number for the operation.
  7. Liaison with Flight Operations Manager and Training Manager that the pilots, are current and qualified for the duties expected of them.
  8. Maintains and controls the duty roster and arranges standby air crew in consultation with the Flight Operations Manager.
  9. Maintains a complete record of the licenses, ratings, training and medical status of the aforesaid aircrew.
  10. Ensure pilot files are up to date as prescribed by the Civil Aviation Authority and the Flight Operations Manual.
  11. Maintain and update the Wilderness Air Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) in conjunction with the Flight Operations Manager.
  12. Assist Flight Operations on errors and legal liability aspects of the Schedule.
  13. Co-ordinate with the Training Manager all theoretical training, instruction and flying training exercises of the aircrew employed.
  14. Supervision of all pilots in conjunction with the Flight Operations Manager in relation to the pilots working conditions, personal matters and leave applications.
  15. Ensure all pilots adhere to the Wilderness Air policies and procedures.
  16. Ensure that the pilots abide by the Wilderness Air Disciplinary Code and Code of Conduct
  17. Chair pilot meetings which include the taking of minutes.
  18. Assist the Flight Operations Manager in respect of any 90-day record requests.
  19. Attend and contribute to Management and monthly Maintenance meetings.
  20. Liaise with the Flight Operations Manager on any operational issues requiring attention.
  21. Liaise with the Flight Safety Manager on safety related matters.
  22. Liaise with the Quality Assurance Manager on compliance matters.
  23. Ensure that new pilots are inducted as per the Wilderness Induction Manual.
  24. Ensure constant update on airfield assessment reports.

REQUIRED MINIMUM. EDUCATION / TRAINING

  • Hold a current Commercial Pilot License with type ratings applicable to all aircraft types on the AOC.
  • Broad operational knowledge and experience in the function of the organization including training management; aircraft operations; air traffic management; aerodrome operations; and maintenance organization management.
  • Sound knowledge of quality and safety management principles and practices.
  • A recognised Aviation Flight Safety and/or Quality Management qualification is an advantage.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to relate to all operational levels, both inside and outside the organization.
  • Organizational ability.
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Worthy of respect from peers and management.
