The Kipushi Project S.A. is looking for a Artisan Fitter UG (Underground) 

The Kipushi Project, in the DRC’s province of Haut-Katanga and southeast of the company’s Kamoa discovery, is adjacent to the town of Kipushi and approximately 30 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital of Lubumbashi. Ivanhoe Mines acquired its 68% interest in the Kipushi Project in November 2011; the balance of 32% is held by the DRC’s state-owned mining company, Gécamines.

The Kipushi Project is based on the high-grade, underground zinc-copper mine in the Central African Copperbelt, which mined approximately 60 million tonnes grading 11% zinc and 7% copper between 1924 and 1993. In addition to producing copper and zinc, the mine produced 12,673 tonnes of lead and approximately 278 tonnes of germanium between 1956 and 1978.

To conduct maintenance on the Shafts surface and UG for the benefit of mining continuity. The incumbent supervises a small group of Assistants and the scope of this role includes maintenance of all pipes, pumps, conveyor belts, crusher, winders, crushers, ventilation fans and assorted other workpieces in the shaft, and both scheduled and emergency maintenance.

You will have the following:

  • Trade certificate
  • Engineering Diploma (Mechanical)
  • Literate, numerate
  • 15+ years’ relevant experience as an Artisan, Fitter
  • Experience in the mining environment highly advantageous

You will have advanced skills and knowledge in:

  • Shafts Maintenance Standards Operating Procedures 
  • Hydraulic systems (and oils) 
  • Ore transport systems 
  • Winders 
  • Valves

Your Key Performance Activities will include but not limited to: 

Process: Deliver maintenance work according to Standard Operating Procedures 

  • Receive job cards and take direction from Line Manager
  • Conduct daily inspection of critical equipment to establish maintenance needs and report these to Line Manager
  • Task Assistants and Artisans with daily inspection of non-critical equipment to establish maintenance needs, obtain their feedback, and report to Line Manager
  • Receive notification of planned shutdowns or of opportunity downtime from Line Manager and/or Maintenance Planners
  • Report any required consumables/stock/spares/parts to Line Manager and assist in the collection of materials
  • Prepare tools and equipment for maintenance task as per job card
  • Ensure housekeeping quality standards are met in each area inspected and worked in
  • Supervise, instruct and support a team of Assistants in the maintenance of various required components. Perform Over-Inspections of all work done by Assistants
  • Maintain a continuous Quality Assurance checking process, ensuring that work being done is satisfactory and completed to quality and standards
  • Report on all work done to Line Manager, daily
  • Undertake any emergency maintenance as required to limit delays due to breakdownsLock process or equipment that has resulted in the breakdown whilst working on it
  • Test process or equipment to ensure maintenance work has been successful
  • Unlock process or equipment once maintenance is complete
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environment at all times
  • Monitor and control business processes according to quality standards; policy; and compliance and governance requirements in area of accountability
  • Prioritise team maintenance tasks in terms of what is required to keep the equipment running and therefore to limit production downtime
  • Return completed and signed job card to Line Manager
  • Return tools and equipment to stores post-job completion
