Student Wellness Advisor (Durban Campus)
Job Description
SACAP is looking for a Student Wellness Advisor based at our Durban Campus.
This role will provide comprehensive psychosocial support and development services to ensure students achieve optimal mental and emotional health. This position has a particular focus on the disability support unit. The advisor will serve as a trusted resource for students in need of support and guidance, offering counselling, resources, and referrals as needed. Additionally, the role will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators to promote a healthy campus environment and help students thrive both academically and personally. This position will closely liaise with the Disability Committee, Student Administration and Academic teams and report directly to the Student Wellness Manager.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Provide individual and/or group counselling (including crisis intervention / debriefing) to students in need of mental health support
- Acting as a point of contact for all student wellness support and development needs;
- Take on a lead role in student wellness and mental health awareness campaigns and projects
- Responding to and resolving student queries within the stipulated time frames;
- Involved in termly orientation per new cohort;
- Develop and implement mental health outreach initiatives, including workshops, group sessions, and community events, to promote mental health and wellness among students.
- Tracking and documenting national student wellness support and development metrics;
- Study plans and career guidance;
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop and implement policies and programs that support student well-being and promote a healthy campus environment. Identifying at-risk students and tracking retention;
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of all interactions with students, including progress notes and treatment plans.
- Stay up-to-date on current research and best practices in mental health counselling and wellness promotion.
- Utilising SACAP’s Student Management System to provide expert guidance to SACAP students.
- May act as site coordinator to student counsellors completing their practicum / Work Integrated Learning hours.
QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCES
- A minimum of a degree qualification in the discipline of Counselling, Psychology or Coaching; or at least 5-years’ experience in a cognate field with high academic results
- Registered Counsellor with HPCSA
- Advanced computer literacy skills, including online systems
- 2 years of full-time experience, preferably within the field of Higher Education.
- Knowledgeable and passionate about SACAP and its offerings
- Highly developed relationship building / interpersonal skills
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills

This role reports directly to the Student Wellness Manager and will work closely and collaboratively with the broader national student support and development teams.
Operating Hours
This is a full-time position operating from Mondays to Fridays*:
Monday – Thursday: 08:00 – 16:30
Friday: 08:00 – 16:00
*Note that you will be required to administer various student support webinars during the evenings, and/or attend Open Days from time to time, and therefore flexible hours do apply.
