Job Description
Position: Commissioning Editor/Publisher (Kwela non-fiction)
Reports to: Kwela imprint head
Location: Cape Town
Kwela Books has an exciting permanent position available for a self-starter with strong editorial, project management and people skills to expand its range of non-fiction titles. Kwela Books is an imprint of NB Publishers.
What you’ll do:
- Conceptualise and commission commercially viable book concepts with an emphasis on non-fiction.
- Review and assess manuscripts for merit and commercial viability.
- Project manage new titles from manuscript to publication (including negotiating author contracts, assisting authors in developing manuscripts and co-ordinating book and cover design).
- Ensure projects are published on time and to the highest quality standards.
- Manage a team of freelancers on each book project.
- Liaise with sales, marketing and publicity colleagues.
- Managing the backlist, including reprints.
What you’ll need to apply:
- A tertiary qualification in Journalism, Languages (English and/or any of indigenous languages), Publishing or related.
- 1-2 years’ experience in book publishing, as an editor or journalist in the media, or relevant field, or experience in the book retail environment.
